Modeling the flexo-photovoltaic effect for a new generation of renewable-energy devices
This project aims at developing a new generation of renewable-energy devices based on the flexo-photovoltaic effect—the interaction between mechanics, electricity, and light—, which is in principle operative in any material, including those with good sunlight absorption. More specifically, exploiting the so-called flexoelectric effect, upon the application of inhomogeneous deformation (mechanics), electric polarization is generated (electricity) at the nanoscopic scale. Thereby, upon illumination (light), the generated charge carriers are effectively separated, producing electric current.
